Pat Dietrich, Library Media Specialist
Our new library was dedicated on October 30, 2007 to the students of Kate Sullivan with the goal
of making their learning journey more enjoyable and meaningful. We will strive to meet information
needs and foster a love of reading within our students.
Kate Sullivan’s media program promotes the enjoyment of literature through programs that encourage reading. K-2 students participate in the Florida Reading Association program. 3-5 students participate in the Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award program. The media center sponsors a Literary Luncheon as the culminating activity for students who read 14 or 15 of the SSYRA books.
Teaching Focus for the Third Nine Week Period The Scholastic Book Fair visits our school from March 2 -12. Students learn the difference between a library and a book fair is that you borrow books in a library and you can buy a book to keep at a book fair. Kindergarten Classes will begin a unit on story elements. We will read Corduroy books to learn that a character is a person or an animal in a story. "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" is the story we will use to learn that events are what happen in a story. Clifford stories will be used to learn that the setting is where the story happens. The learning goal is that children understand that all stories have certain story elements in common. First Graders will complete a unit on library skills. "The Shelf Elf" will teach students that books are arranged in a library in a certain way and that we should do our best to keep the shelves orderly. Students will learn to use a shelf marker to help them put books back just where they belong. "Alpha Betty" will teach the children that books are arranged in alphabetical order according to the author's last name. Finally "Goldie Socks and the Three Libearians" will teach students how to pick their "just right" book. The learning objective is to be knowledgeable about libraries so that they can find a book that suits their interest or need. Third Grade classes will continue learning library skills so that they can independently look for and find the books they want or need. This nine week period we will focus on non-fiction books and the Dewey Decimal System. The objective is for students to be able to gather information effectively in a library based on interest or curriculum need. We will also do two lessons on internet safety and digital etiquette. Fifth grade classes will learn the FINDS method for research. We will learn how to evaluate web sites for accuracy and dependability. We will explore electronic resources such as Grolier Online Encyclopedia and Culture Grams. Our objective is that the students can use their school library to access resources and information needed for research and know an organizational process for completing research. F-Focus on the information need I - Investigate resources to look for an answer N - Note and evaluate facts D - Develop information into knowledge for presentation S - Score your presentation and search
